Twitter Launches ‘Fleet’ Messages that Disappear in a Day
November 18, 2020
Twitter「

Twitter Launches ‘Fleet’ Messages that Disappear in a Day
Twitter has launched a new feature that lets users post tweets that disappear after a day.
The social media company calls the new tweets “fleets.” The word fleet is an adjective meaning very fast or quick. Fleets can be sent as written messages, pictures or videos.
Twitter says it decided to add the feature after some users expressed concerns about the current tweeting system.
“Some of you tell us that tweeting is uncomfortable because it feels so public, so permanent,” the company said Tuesday in an announcement on its website. Some users also feel a lot of pressure to receive large numbers of likes and retweets, it added.
Fleets cannot be retweeted and will not have likes. The only way a person can answer or comment on a fleet is by sending the user a direct message. This prevents any back-and-forth communication between users from becoming a public discussion.
“To help people feel more comfortable, we've been working on a lower pressure way for people to talk about what’s happening,” Twitter said. Fleets were launched “so everyone can easily join the conversation in a new way – with their fleeting thoughts.”
The new Twitter feature comes long after other social media services – including Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram – added the ability for users to send disappearing messages. Such messages have become increasingly popular with social media users looking for smaller groups or more private messaging.
The company had been testing the feature in Brazil, Italy, India and South Korea before launching it worldwide.
"Those new to Twitter found fleets to be an easier way to share what's on their mind," the Twitter statement said. "Because they disappear from view after a day, fleets helped people feel more comfortable sharing personal and casual thoughts, opinions, and feelings."
However, some Twitter users who experimented with the feature said they were worried that the tool may create new possibilities for online abuse. For example, they said fleets could permit the sending of unwanted direct messages. The feature also permits fleet writers to “tag” people who have blocked them.
A Twitter official told Reuters news agency it was listening to suggestions from users and would work to fix safety concerns like the blocking issue.
Twitter and other social media companies are under pressure to do a better job of preventing abuses and limiting the spread of misinformation on their websites.
Another new Twitter feature set to launch to all users next year is the "voice tweet," an audio recording that takes the place of a written message. The company’s product designer, Maya Gold Patterson, said many users feel Twitter’s 280-character message model is too limiting.
"And sometimes tweeting isn't the right way of communicating at the moment,” Patterson said. “So we were interested in exploring how audio could help add an additional layer to the public conversation." The feature has been tested in recent months.
Twitter also confirmed plans to launch a live audio feature, called “Spaces.” This tool will permit users to talk in public, group conversations. It is similar to Clubhouse, a social service in which users are invited to hold conversations in voice chat rooms.

New Device Puts Music in Your Head
November 16, 2020

New Device Puts Music in Your Head
Imagine a world where you move around in front of a personal computer in your own sound space. You listen to your favorite songs, play loud computer games or watch a movie — all without other people hearing the sound.
That is the possibility presented by “sound beaming,” a new technology from Noveto Systems, an Israeli company.
On Friday, the company debuted a desktop device that sends sound directly to a listener without the need for headphones or a special receiver.
Noveto Systems gave The Associated Press (AP) a chance to test its SoundBeamer 1.0 before its debut. The AP’s Louise Dixon writes that listening to the device is like something from a science fiction movie. The sound seems so close it feels like it is inside your ears while also in front, above and behind them.
Noveto expects the device will have many uses. Office workers could listen to music or conference calls without others hearing. People could play a game, a movie or music without waking up others in the same room.
Because the device does not use headphones, it is possible to hear other sounds in the room clearly.
The device uses a 3-D technology that finds and follows the ear position of the listener. It sends ultrasonic waves to create sound pockets by the user’s ears.
Sound can be heard in stereo or 3-D. The 3-D method creates sound on all sides of the listener, the company said.
The demo version of the device included nature videos of birds on a lake, bees flying and a quiet waterway.
SoundBeamer Product Manager Ayana Wallwater enjoys watching the reactions of people trying the technology for the first time.
“Most people just say, ‘Wow, I really don’t believe it,’” she said.
“You don’t believe it because it sounds like a speaker, but no one else can hear it…it’s supporting you and you’re in the middle of everything. It’s happening around you.”
By changing a setting, the sound can follow a listener around when they move their head. It also is possible to move out of the sound beam’s path and hear nothing at all.
“You don’t need to tell the device where you are. It’s not streaming to one exact place,” Wallwater said.
While the idea of sound beaming is not new, Noveto was the first to launch the technology. Its chief executive officer Christophe Ramstein said a “smaller” version of the device will be ready for release to consumers next year.

'No Smoke Without Fire'
November 14, 2020
There is no smoke without fire.
“there’s no smoke without fire.” と言いますし、または“where there’s smoke there’s fire.”
'No Smoke Without Fire'
Today we talk about fire. Any kind of fire – from a campfire to a lit match – gives off smoke. This fact about fire relates to today’s idiom: There is no smoke without fire.
Before we continue, let’s talk about two words often used to explain this idiom: rumor and gossip.
Rumors and gossip are stories or pieces of information that are passed from person to person but have not been proven to be true. They are often about something bad.
One meaning of “there’s no smoke without fire” is that rumors and gossip often have some truth behind them.
If the word on the street is that something is really bad, it just might be. Or if you hear unpleasant things about someone or something from many different people, there may be some truth to it. Maybe.
Here’s an example:
I think we should start looking for another job. I’ve heard that this bank is going under. It could just be gossip. But usually there’s no smoke without fire.
In other words, there must be at least some truth to all the talk. The logic is this: If many people are saying that something bad is happening, it could be partly true.
We say this idiom several ways. You can say, “there’s no smoke without fire.” Or you can say, “where there’s smoke there’s fire.” You can even simply say, “where there’s smoke…” without finishing the rest of the sentence. People will definitely understand your meaning.
Here is another example.
Hey, I hear you’re going out with that new guy at work.
We went for a long walk together. That’s about it.
Well, be careful. Rumor has it that he is bad news.
What kind of bad news?
Well, he’s been married before.
So. There’s no crime against having a marriage that didn’t work out.
Right. But he’s been married four times. My cousin knows a former wife of his. She says the guy owes money all over town.
This is all just gossip.
Look, I’m just saying be careful. Where there’s smoke … yeah, you know.
And that brings us to the end of this week’s Words and Their Stories.

Lebanon Faces Drug Shortage, Economic Crisis
4 hours ago 、Nov.14,2020

Lebanon Faces Drug Shortage, Economic Crisis
Heart drugs and all kinds of other medicines have disappeared from drug stores across Lebanon. The drug shortage is the latest in a series of problems in the country, which was once a center for medical services, banking and real estate.
Rita Harb works as a nurse at a hospital in Beirut, the capital. She cannot find heart drugs for her 85-year-old grandfather.
She has searched Lebanese drug stores and called friends overseas. Not even doctors she knew could get the drugs from pharmacies or other providers.
Harb’s story is becoming increasingly common in Lebanon.
Officials and pharmacists say the drug shortage was made worse by panic buying and hoarding after an announcement by the country’s Central Bank governor. He said that with the supply of foreign money running low, the government would not be able to keep up subsidies, including subsidies on drugs.
That announcement “caused a storm, an earthquake,” said Ghassan al-Amin, head of the Order of Pharmacists of Lebanon.
Many Lebanese now search the country and beyond for necessary drugs. Older adults ask religious organizations and aid groups for help.
In the country’s economic crisis, more than half the population has been pushed into poverty. Lebanon’s money has lost nearly 80 percent of its value. People’s savings also have dropped in value.
Lebanon imports nearly everything, including 85 percent of its drugs.
Lifting subsidies is a likely step for the government. This is expected to increase prices and inflation. Fixed at 1,500 to the U.S. dollar for many years, the Lebanese pound is now worth around 7,000 for $1 on the black market.
The difference between the official and black-market dollar rate has fueled smuggling. In other words, subsidized Lebanese drugs were secretly taken to neighboring countries.
In the chaos, six out of every 10 brand drugs have become unavailable, notes Malak Khiami, the pharmacist at Amel Association, an aid group.
For years, around 20 importers have controlled Lebanon’s drug market. Lebanese law awards rights to some drug importers, giving them power to resist reforms and keep out competitors.
The import rights are part of Lebanon’s economic order, which after the civil war’s end became controlled by militia chiefs, wealthy traders and real estate owners.
As that economic order falls apart, the market for foreign drugs will likely become smaller, says Viviane Akiki, an economic reporter. “The dollar shortage will impose new solutions.”
In the Zoukaq al-Blat neighborhood of Beirut, Mahmoud Mahmoud’s pharmacy was quiet. Except for painkillers and other products, the store’s shelves were empty.
Mahmoud believes suppliers are holding back drugs because they are waiting for higher prices — or smuggling them out of the country. One gout drug, he said, was found in Iraq, selling for $7, more than five times its price in Lebanon.
“They are destroying the profession,” said Mahmoud. “With the way the country is going, the profession is collapsing.”

Refugees Tell About Conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray Area

Refugees Tell About Conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray Area
Filimon heard the sound of heavy weapons in his Ethiopian border town, and he started to run. Filimon is an Ethiopian refugee who spoke to the Associated Press, or AP.
He is now in Sudan. He does not know if his wife and two small children are trapped in the fighting or among the thousands of refugees. He is afraid and would only give one name.
Speaking by phone to AP from Sudan on Thursday, Filimon described what he experienced in the Tigray town of Humera last week.
He said those attacking came from the direction of Eritrea, though he does not know if they were Eritrean forces.
Ethiopia may be close to a civil war as it fights Tigray militants at its northern border. The Tigrayans are demanding greater independence. Experts fear the conflict could bring in neighboring countries on both sides.
Tigray leaders have accused Eritrea of joining the week-long conflict at the request of Ethiopia’s federal government. Ethiopia’s government calls the Tigray government illegal. Ethiopia has denied the involvement of Eritrean forces.
Filimon’s problems are far simpler.
After a day-long walk with about 30 others fleeing, he has been in Sudan for two days.
There are 11,000 refugees now, but officials are preparing for up to 100,000, the United Nations refugee agency said Thursday. About half of them are children.
The UN agency said it was not taking statements yet about the fighting. It is just trying to treat the wounded and separate soldiers from refugees.
In Ethiopia, worries over the conflict are spreading far beyond the northern Tigray area. The federal government said it had detained about 150 “operatives” accused of trying to spread “fear and terror” throughout the country.
Hours later, police in Addis Ababa said they had arrested 242 people for trying “to cause terror in the capital.” It is not clear if these are separate numbers.
Tigrayans in Addis Ababa are scared. “We don’t go to the office because they might also arrest us,” said one ethnic Tigrayan in the capital.
Ethiopia’s parliament has accused top Tigrayan officials of “attacking the federal army.” It voted to remove immunity from prosecution for 39 top Tigray officials, including its president.
Around the country, people have demonstrated in support of the federal government’s military moves against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, or TPLF. That group governs the area.
Ethiopia’s prime minister won the Nobel Peace Prize for his peacemaking efforts. But Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has rejected international requests for negotiations. He said TPLF officials must be removed and arrested and all their weapons destroyed.
What appears to be a sudden move toward civil war has been coming for months. After taking office in 2018, Abiy announced political reforms that won him the Nobel prize. However, he also pushed the TPLF aside. It had been a major part of Ethiopia’s federal government.
The TPLF left the government and held its own local elections. Ethiopia’s federal government considers this illegal.

First Passengers Get to Ride ‘Hyperloop’ Transporter
November 13, 2020
First Passengers Get to Ride ‘Hyperloop’ Transporter
The American company Virgin Hyperloop says the high-speed transportation system it is developing has passed its first test with passengers.
The company said the successful test was carried out on November 8 at its 500-meter DevLoop test area in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Hyperloop system is based on a technology called magnetic levitation. It uses magnetic fields to create a floating effect for a transportation vehicle and push it forward.
Some high-speed trains also use this technology. But unlike trains, Hyperloop is designed to operate within pressurized tubes. It uses electric propulsion to move vehicles, called pods, through the tubes at high speeds.
The recent test involved two members of Virgin Hyperloop’s leadership team. The pod carrying them reached speeds of up to 172 kilometers an hour, the company said.
Sara Luchian, the company’s Director of Passenger Experience, was one of the passengers. Luchian told the BBC she felt the trip was "exhilarating - both psychologically and physically."
Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem is the chairman of Virgin Hyperloop. “I had the true pleasure of seeing history made before my very eyes,” he said in a statement, after watching the test. Bin Sulayem added that he felt he had witnessed “the first new mode of mass transportation in over 100 years come to life.”
Hyperloop says it has already run over 400 tests without passengers at its Nevada site. But the company said the latest test shows that it had successfully developed the technology into a safe transportation system.
Jay Walder is the CEO of Virgin Hyperloop. “I can’t tell you how often I get asked ‘is Hyperloop safe?,’” he said. “With today’s passenger testing, we have successfully answered this question.”
A two-person car was specially developed for the test. Virgin Hyperloop says the actual production vehicle, when completed, will carry up to 28 passengers.
Los Angeles-based Hyperloop envisions a future in which its floating pods would carry passengers and cargo at speeds of up to 966 kilometers an hour.
The system offers near silent travel and will release no carbon emissions. The company says the pods could complete a trip between New York and Washington, D.C. in just 30 minutes. That would be twice as fast as a jet flight and four times faster than a high-speed train.
The test comes a month after it was reported that Virgin Hyperloop plans to build a $500 million certification and testing center in West Virginia.
The company has said it is working to get a safety certification by the year 2025 and aims to launch transportation services by 2030.
Virgin Hyperloop has raised more than $400 million, largely from Virgin Group chief Richard Branson and the port operations company DP World, which is owned by the Dubai government. Virgin is one of several companies working to develop the technology.

Images Can Help You Retain Vocabulary
Cristiana Galvão
