Can the US Do to Help Ukraine?
Jan.24,2022

British Labs Supply the World with Genetic Information about COVID-19
Jan. 24, 2022
※ genome sequencing: 【dʒíːnoum síːkwənsiŋ 】
British Labs Supply the World with Genetic Information about COVID-19
British scientists have created a fast, less costly process for genome sequencing each coronavirus case they examine.
Britain is now a world leader in COVID-19 sequencing. This helps public health officials follow the spread of new variants, develop vaccines and decide when restrictions on movement are necessary.
Researchers at the Sanger Institute in Cambridge and other laboratories in Britain have a new mission. They are sharing what they have learned with scientists around the world.
The Omicron variant now spreading in many countries shows the need for worldwide cooperation, said Ewan Harrison. He is a top researcher at Sanger.
Omicron was first found by scientists in southern Africa who quickly informed the world and gave officials time to prepare.
Since dangerous mutations of the virus can happen anywhere, scientists must continually watch its development to protect everyone, Harrison said.
“We can’t just kind of put a fence around an individual country or parts of the world, because that’s just not going to cut it,’’ he said.
Cambridge University Professor Sharon Peacock understood the importance of sequencing the virus early in the pandemic. She knew sequencing would be important to fighting the virus. She received British government money for a national organization of scientists, laboratories and testing centers known as the COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium.
The consortium is now working to increase knowledge of sequencing around the world. It has built training programs for researchers in developing countries. The programs include planned online classes on information sharing and working with public health officials. The goal is to help researchers build national programs to sequence COVID-19 viruses.
“There is inequity in access to sequencing worldwide,” the group said, adding that it wants to end the unequal situation.
By sequencing as many cases of the virus as possible, researchers hope to identify variants of concern as quickly as possible. They can then follow their spread and give early warnings to health officials.
Britain has supplied more COVID-19 sequences to researchers around the world than any country other than the United States. It has also sequenced a bigger percentage of its cases than any large nation.
Researchers in Britain have released about 1.68 million sequences, or about 11 percent of reported cases, said GISAID. GISAID is an international organization that works for quick sharing of virus information.
Over the past two years, labs around Britain have refined the process of gathering and studying COVID-19 viruses.
This has helped cut the cost of examining each genome by 50 percent. It has also reduced the time is takes to sequence from three weeks to five days, said the research group Wellcome Sanger.
Increasing sequencing ability is like building a pipeline, said Dr. Eric Topol. He is head of innovative medicine at Scripps Research in San Diego, California. In addition to buying costly sequencing machines, countries need supplies of reactive chemicals for the machines. They also need trained people to do the work and who understand the sequences. They also need systems to share the information quickly.
Meeting those needs has been difficult for many nations, including the U.S. It is even harder for developing nations, Topol said.
“Many of these low- and middle-income countries don’t have the sequencing capabilities, particularly with any reasonable turnaround time,” he said. “So, the idea that there’s a helping hand there from the Wellcome Center is terrific. We need that.”
Virus samples arrive from around the country. Lab assistants carefully prepare the genetic material. It is placed into the sequencing devices that read each sample’s unique DNA. Scientists then examine the information and compare it with other identified genomes to follow mutations. They want to see how the virus is developing.
Because COVID-19 mutates all the time, it is important to look for new, more dangerous variants that might be resistant to vaccines, Harrison said. This information will help researchers change existing vaccines or create new ones to fight the virus.
Harrison praised South Africa for quickly informing the world about the Omicron variant. But other countries, he said, punished South Africa by restricting travel and harming its economy. All nations must be permitted to publish new variant information without fear of being punished, he said.

Genome Gene DNA

Funny Man Jon Stewart Named Winner of Mark Twain Prize for Humor
American television star and political commentator Jon Stewart has been named winner of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
The award is presented by the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. It honors people who have influenced others in the field of the performing arts.
Stewart, whose birth name is Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz, is 59 years old. He rose to fame as a standup comedian and host of several talk shows. His popularity grew most after he joined The Daily Show in 1999. He hosted the satirical news program for 16 years on the Comedy Central television channel. Through exploration and sharply funny criticism of politics and culture, Stewart came to influence what many people thought about some issues in the United States.
In 2004, Stewart gained wide attention for an appearance on a CNN political debate show called Crossfire. The comedian said the hosts of the show, a conservative and a liberal, did not provide honest, productive arguments. He told the two men that they had a “responsibility to the public discourse” and were failing at it.
“You’re doing theater when you should be doing debate,” said Stewart in an openly hostile exchange with one host. “What you do is not honest. What you do is partisan hackery.”
Stewart's appearance made him even more popular with the public than before. Crossfire was cancelled three months later.
Since retiring from The Daily Show in 2015, Stewart has become a supporter of several social causes. He is active in efforts to get better health care for emergency workers in New York City who responded to the 9-11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
More recently, he returned to television as host of The Problem with Jon Stewart on Apple TV+.
“For me, tuning into his television programs over the years has always been equal parts entertainment and truth,” Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter said in a statement. He “demonstrates that we all can make a difference in this world through humor, humanity, and patriotism,” she added.
Stewart will be presented with the award during a ceremony on April 24. The event will include speeches from other comedians and surprise guests.

Study Finds New Evidence Linking Virus to Multiple Sclerosis
Study Finds New Evidence Linking Virus to Multiple Sclerosis
Researchers have found more evidence that one of the world’s most common viruses may be linked to the disease multiple sclerosis.
MS causes the body’s own immune system to mistakenly attack nerve cells. It destroys the protective material that covers nerve tissue.
The Epstein-Barr virus has long been suspected of playing a part in development of MS. But a connection is hard to prove because just about everybody gets infected with Epstein-Barr but few develop MS.
Last week, Harvard researchers reported one of the largest studies yet to support the possible link between the virus and MS. They studied a supply of blood samples from usual medical tests on more than 10 million members of the American military. The samples cover a period from 1993 to 2013. The scientists searched the samples for antibodies signaling viral infection.
They found that the risk of MS increased by 32 times following Epstein-Barr infection.
Only 5.3 percent of the sampled group were free of signs of the virus when they joined the military. The researchers compared 801 MS cases found later over the 20-year period with 1,566 service members who never got MS.
Only one of the MS patients had no evidence of the Epstein-Barr virus before their MS diagnosis. And the researchers found no evidence that other viral infections were involved.
The findings “strongly suggest” that Epstein-Barr infection is “a cause and not a consequence of MS,” study leader Alberto Ascherio and his team reported in the publication Science. Dr. Ascherio is with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
The virus appears to be “the initial trigger,” Dr. William H. Robinson and Dr. Lawrence Steinman of Stanford University wrote in a report alongside the study.
Epstein-Barr is best known for causing “mono,” or infectious mononucleosis, in teenagers and young adults. The virus remains inactive in the body after infection and has been linked to later development of some autoimmune diseases, including MS, and rare cancers.
It is not clear why. Some scientists think the body is tricked by viral proteins that look very much like nerve proteins.
Whatever the cause may be, the new study is “the strongest evidence to date that Epstein-Barr contributes to cause MS,” said Mark Allegretta. He is vice president for research at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
He added that the evidence, “opens the door to potentially prevent MS by preventing Epstein-Barr infection.”

EBV(Epstein-Barr virus:
MS(多発性硬化症)
mono(伝染性単核球症)

Microsoft Aims to Buy Gaming Company Activision for $69 Billion
January 19, 2022
Call of Duty、World of Warcraft、Candy Crushなどの人気・収益性の高いビデオゲームシリーズを製造しています。
Microsoft Aims to Buy Gaming Company Activision for $69 Billion
Software maker Microsoft is buying the video game company Activision Blizzard for nearly $69 billion in one of the biggest technology deals in history.
Microsoft announced the agreement Tuesday and said it is expected to be completed in 2023. The deal must be approved by government regulators.
Activision Blizzard produces a series of popular and profitable video games including Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Candy Crush. Microsoft is the maker of the Xbox gaming system and is expected to add those games, along with others, to its subscription service.
If approved, the deal will turn the software maker into one of the world’s largest video game companies. It is expected to better position Microsoft to take on other major videogame competitors like China’s Tencent and Japan’s Sony.
The deal is also expected to help Microsoft better compete with technology companies developing equipment and systems for a future “metaverse.” Metaverse is a term used to describe a non-physical world in which individuals can interact through different kinds of virtual technology.
Among the companies that have confirmed the development of metaverse technologies are Microsoft, Facebook’s parent Meta, Google and Apple. In announcing the agreement, Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella said gaming is expected to play an important part "in the development of metaverse” systems.
Experts said the deal will turn Microsoft into the third-largest video game company in the world, a position formerly held by Japan’s Nintendo. Only Sony – maker of the PlayStation gaming system – and Chinese technology leader Tencent are bigger.
Microsoft’s Xbox already develops and produces its own games. But the deal with Activision Blizzard will give the company control of many additional games. This is likely to raise questions about whether Microsoft could shut out competitors by restricting Activision games to its own Xbox system and Windows-powered computers.
Nadella, however, promised this would not be the case. He said the deal would actually help people play games “wherever, whenever and however they want.”
Daniel Ives is an industry expert with Wedbush Securities. He told The Associated Press that Microsoft “needed to do an aggressive deal” because the company has plans to greatly expand in streaming and metaverse development.
Ives added that the size of the deal is likely to bring closer attention from regulatory agencies in the United States and Europe.
One group, Public Citizen, criticized the proposed agreement. The group’s Alex Harman called on the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice to block the deal. “If Microsoft wants to bet on the ‘metaverse,’ it should invest in new technology, not swallow up a competitor,” Harman said.
The deal came after Activision Blizzard faced months of accusations involving sexual misconduct at the company by several top managers. There were also employee accusations of workplace discrimination and unequal pay.
The company has said it is still investigating and dealing with the accusations. On Monday, Activision Blizzard said it had fired or pushed out more than 36 employees for violating company policies and disciplined 40 others since July.
In a conference call with investors, Nadella did not directly speak about the misconduct issues. But he did talk about the importance of company culture. "It's critical for Activision Blizzard to drive forward on its renewed cultural commitments," he said, adding, "the success of this (deal) will depend on it."

Indonesia Passes Law to Move Capital to Borneo Jungle
January 19, 2022
Indonesia Passes Law to Move Capital to Borneo Jungle
Indonesia’s parliament on Tuesday passed a law to move the country’s capital from Jakarta to an area deep within the jungle of Kalimantan on Borneo island.
The country’s leaders have been considering the move for several years.
The new law provides a legal system for President Joko Widodo's $32-billion project. It explains the requirements for the development of the new capital, including financing and governance.
The new capital will be “a symbol of the identity of the nation, as well as a new center of economic gravity," Planning Minister Suharso Monoarfa told parliament.
The move will start from between 2022 and 2024, with roads and ports built first. Some projects will operate as public-private partnerships, the finance ministry said.
Jakarta, a city of 10 million people, suffers from overcrowding, flooding and air pollution. Several former presidents have considered moving the capital, but none have advanced the idea until now.
Widodo first announced his plan in 2019. The plan got delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The new city has a name that he chose: Nusantara. The word is a Javanese term for the Indonesian island group.
There is not a set date for the finalization of the project. Jakarta will remain the capital until there is a presidential order to formally change it.
The government said in a statement that the new capital will strengthen trade relationships and give Indonesia a better position in “world trade routes, investment flows and technological innovation.”
The government also said the new capital will be “low-carbon.” It added that the city will support health and technology industries.
Critics say the law was pushed through with little consideration for environmental concerns or public opinion.
Nusantara will be led by a chief official who acts as a minister, a member of the law’s special committee said on Monday. Jakarta’s former governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, also known as Ahok, is among those being considered for the position.

Researchers Find Moon in Another Solar System
January 19, 2022
Researchers Find Moon in Another Solar System
For only the second time, researchers have found what appears to be a moon orbiting a planet in another solar system. Just like the first time, this one has qualities that suggest such moons may differ greatly from those in our solar system.
Data captured by NASA's Kepler space telescope before it was retired in 2018 suggested the presence of a moon 2.6 times the diameter of Earth. This possible moon was orbiting a Jupiter-sized gas planet about 5,700 light-years away from our solar system, scientists said recently.
A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, 9.5 trillion kilometers.
This moon's diameter would make it larger than any of the roughly 220 ones known to be orbiting planets in our solar system. It is also more than nine times the diameter of Earth's moon.
David Kipping of Columbia University was the lead writer of the research that appeared in the publication Nature Astronomy
Kipping said much remained unknown about the object. “It could be a rocky core with a light fluffy envelope or a thick atmosphere all the way down to some high-density core," he said.
Our solar system's moons are all rocky or icy objects.
Close to 5,000 exoplanets, or planets beyond our solar system, have been identified. But only two exomoons, or moons beyond our solar system, have been found. That is not because moons are thought to be any rarer in other solar systems, but because planets are generally larger and easier to find, the researchers said.
The first exomoon candidate, described in 2018 by the same lead researchers and still awaiting confirmation, is even larger. It is about the size of our solar system's planet Neptune. This possible exomoon is located about 8,000 light-years from Earth. It appears to be made of gases unlike any of our solar system's moons.
"Exomoons are terra incognita," Kipping said, using a Latin term meaning unknown land.
"The researchers employed the "transit method" often used to find exoplanets. They observed a change in the brightness of the sun-like star around which the moon's planet orbits when the planet and then the exomoon passed in front of it. The Kepler telescope obtained data on two such transits.
Study co-writer Alex Teachey of the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics (ASIAA) in Taiwan, said this was another exciting exomoon finding, "suggesting again that large moons may be present in other planetary systems and that we can potentially detect them."
The researchers studied 70 cold, giant, gas exoplanets on wide orbits around their host stars, knowing that two such planets in our own solar system - Jupiter and Saturn - are orbited by numerous moons. They found evidence for the one new exomoon, whose size, they said, would earn it the description of being a "mini-Neptune."
"We will want to see follow-up observations to confirm its presence," Teachey said. "Even so, the present study goes a long way towards ruling out alternative explanations for the observed signals.” He added that some doubt “among the (astronomy) community is … important, but I think the paper lays out a convincing, thorough case."
