Guide to 2021’s Top Tech Terms
この１年、新しい技術の進歩に伴い、それを表現するために使われるいくつかの言葉が人気を博しました。ここでは、２０２１年に広く注目されたテクノロジー用語を紹介します。
Metaverse
大手ハイテク企業は、"メタバース "について語るようになりました。この言葉は、さまざまな種類の仮想技術を通じて個人が交流できる非物理的な世界を表しています。
例えば、世界の異なる場所に住む人々が技術を通じて出会い、仮想的に休暇を過ごしたり、スポーツをしたり、一緒にプロジェクトに取り組んだりすることができるようになるかもしれません。
このような世界を実現する主な技術は、バーチャルリアリティ（VR）とオーグメンテッドリアリティ（AR）です。また、メタバース内での体験を向上させるために、他のまだ発明されていない技術も利用されるでしょう。
NFT
NFTとは、non-fungible tokenの略です。暗号通貨として知られるデジタル通貨でも使用されているブロックチェーンという技術をベースにしています。
NFTは、デジタルアート作品など、デジタルで存在するものに付けることができます。NFTは、その作品が本物であることを証明するために使用することができます。作品は誰でも見ることができますが、購入者は作品に対する正式な所有権を持つことになります。
３月には、アメリカのアーティスト、ビープルが制作したNFTがクリスティーズで７０００万ドル近い価格で落札されました。これは、大手オークションハウスが、物理的な形で存在しないアートを売却した史上初のケースでした。
Web３
Web３とは、インターネットの次の段階として考えられる、記録管理技術であるブロックチェーン上で動作する分散型インターネットを表す言葉です。
このモデルは、ユーザーが自分の存在に対して所有権を持ち、インターネット上の自分のデータをコントロールすることを可能にします。現在のインターネットはWeb２と呼ばれ、MetaのFacebookやAlphabetのGoogleのような大手テクノロジー企業が、ユーザーのデータと引き換えにサービスを提供することを許可しています。
Decentralization
decentralization分散化という言葉は、技術業界で広く使われるようになりました。これは、企業や政府がテクノロジー・プラットフォームに対して持つ力の量を減らすことを目的としたプロセスを表しています。このパワーをユーザーに委ねようというのです。
Social Audio
多くのソーシャルメディア企業が、ユーザーが音声でコミュニケーションする方法を開発中であると発表しました。この動きは、ソーシャルメディアアプリClubhouse.クラブハウスの人気上昇を受けたものです。このアプリは、仮想のディスカッションルームで音声によるコミュニケーションを可能にするものです。
このほか、Twitter、Facebook、LinkedIn、Redditが新しい音声サービスを発表しています。
GameFi
GameFiは、ゲーマーがビデオゲームをプレイすることで暗号通貨を獲得するプロセスを表す言葉です。例えば、ゲーム内の戦闘に勝利すると、プレイヤーは金融トークンや賞を獲得することができます。
Altcoin
altcoinコインとは、ビットコイン以外の暗号通貨を指す言葉です。将来の金融システムをサポートすることを目的としたイーサリアムから、冗談で始まったが後にテスラ社のイーロン・マスク氏が普及させたデジタル通貨であるドージコインまで、様々なものがあります。
Fabs
fabsとは、semiconductor fabrication plantの略で、半導体製造工場のことです。半導体は、さまざまな電子機器を製造するために必要な材料です。自動車から電子機器に至るまで、世界的な品不足の原因はファブからのチップ供給にあるとされ、この言葉が広まりました。
A Guide to 2021’s Top Tech Terms
As new technologies progressed over the past year, some words used to describe them rose in popularity. Here is a look at some technology terms that gained wide attention during 2021.
Metaverse
Major tech companies began talking more about the “metaverse.” The term describes a non-physical world in which individuals can interact through different kinds of virtual technology.
For example, a metaverse could permit people living on different sides of the world to meet up through technology and virtually go on a vacation, play sports or work together on projects.
The main technologies that would drive such a world would be virtual reality, or VR, and augmented reality, AR. Other, yet-to-be invented technologies would also be used to improve experiences within the metaverse.
NFT
NFT stands for non-fungible token. It is based on a technology called blockchain, which is also used with digital currencies known as cryptocurrencies.
An NFT can be attached to a piece of digital artwork or other things existing in digital form. The NFT can be used to provide proof that the pieces are real. While anyone can view the work, the buyer has official ownership rights over the pieces.
In March, an NFT created by American artist Beeple sold for nearly $70 million at Christie's. It was the first sale ever by a major auction house of art that did not exist in physical form.
Web3
Web3 is used to describe a possible next stage of the internet: a decentralized internet run on the record-keeping technology blockchain.
This model would permit users to hold ownership over their presence and control their own data on the internet. Today's internet, known as Web2, permits major technology companies like Meta’s Facebook and Alphabet’s Google to provide services in exchange for user data.
Decentralization
The term decentralization became widely used in the tech industry. It describes a process that aims to reduce the amount of power companies or governments have over technology platforms. The idea is to hand this power over to users.
Social Audio
A growing number of social media companies announced they were developing ways for their users to communicate through voice. The moves came after a rise in popularity of the social media app Clubhouse. The app permits users to communicate through audio in virtual discussion rooms.
Among other companies announcing new audio services were Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Reddit.
GameFi
GameFi is a term that describes the process of gamers earning cryptocurrency through playing video games. An example is when players earn financial tokens, or awards, for winning battles in the games.
Altcoin
The word altcoin covers all cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin. This ranges from Ethereum -- which aims to support a future financial system – to Dogecoin, a digital currency that began as a joke, but was later popularized by Tesla chief Elon Musk.
Fabs
The term fabs is short for semiconductor fabrication plant. A semiconductor is a material necessary for producing a wide range of electronic devices. The word became popular as a limited supply of chips from fabs were blamed for a worldwide shortage of everything from automobiles to personal electronic devices.
